8 Damaging Myths In The Dieting World Part Two

4 min read

There’s Plenty Of Scope For A Sequel

Having already written an extensive piece, by my standards, on the countless cases of bad diet advice being bandied about, here’s part two of things to avoid.

It’s a non-exhaustive topic, thanks to every fitaholic declaring themselves as scientists these days. So there’s no chance of scraping the barrel today. Let the purge resume.

1. WHY BEEF WHEN YOU HAVE BROCCOLI

So some guys did the math and found that steak brought home 15 grams of protein per 100 calorie serving, while broccoli had a respectable 8 grams. If you think of the health benefits of good greens, then it’s advantage vegans. Unfortunately to get a 100 calories from broccoli, you need 300g, and at some point it’ll come across as a very challenging meal.

2. JUICE IS GOOD FOR YOU

Don’t let your kids near them. Even when labelled as ‘no added sugar’, the process of making juice highly condenses the fruit into much smaller portions, minus the fiber. So still lots of sugar. A glass of apple juice matches with 6 apples. Ultimately you’re encouraging the brain to confuse dehydration with sugar cravings, a slippery slope.

3. DON’T MISS THE ANABOLIC WINDOW

No running down pensioners while rushing to get your post-workout shake before the 30 minutes are up. Protein re-synthesis is a 24 hour fixture, so you can afford to sleep on that. It’s what you eat over the day that really counts. An hour or two without your fix isn’t taking casualties.

4. LOSE WEIGHT WITH THESE HEALTH SHAKES

Weight-loss shakes can fill the stomach up with froth and fix the hunger spasms. Until 20 minutes later, when the brain figures out that you’re just playing. Then it’s back to craving Ben and Jerry’s. Terrific waste of cash.

5. WHEY PROTEIN IS BAD FOR YOU SINCE IT’S NOT NATURAL

Cyanide is natural, but that doesn’t make it a healthy treat. Protein powder is just whey removed from milk. It’s not a miracle machine, but there’s no negative sides and plenty of positives, especially if you add some milk and cream cheese to the mix.

6. SUGAR MAKES KIDS HYPER

It’s a fun phenomenon that makes a great spectacle, but it’s been debunked. A study showed that the sweet stuff does not drive children bonkers, but the madness is actually made possible by the parents expecting this behaviour. Placebo is a hell of a drug.

7. NUTELLA IS MADE WITH HAZELNUTS, AND IS THEREFORE HEALTHY

There’s a case to be made for this, as hazelnuts grow on trees and are largely comprised of good fats. But there’s a lot more besides getting poured into your chocolate spread. It’s 58% sugar.

Fact of the Day – Nutella was invented during WWII, when an Italian pastry maker mixed hazelnuts into chocolate to extend his chocolate ration.

6. DRINKING RAW EGGS IS A GOOD IDEA

Although it seems a very efficient means of starting the day, only 50% of the egg protein gets used by the body if you don’t cook it first. Just another instance of nature screwing with us. But if you have the extra cash and storage to go double the eggs, problem solved.

7. AN APPLE A DAY KEEPS THE DOCTOR AWAY

Unless you have a good arm, you’re going to have to do a little better than that.

8. EATING THE HEART OF YOUR ENEMIES GRANTS YOU THEIR POWER

There’s no clinical research to back it up. But with that being said, lamb heart is stacked in energising nutrition.

Hope that’s cleared the way a little, because there’s a lot of trips and falls lying in weight for fresh faces. Any time saved not going on a fool’s errand is more time for lifting.
